Walmart Spark: mileage, trip types, and what an offer really pays

Updated September 7, 2026 · published by Baker Ventures LLC · sources cited inline

Spark's mix of trip types is what makes its arithmetic different, and the offer screen flattens all of it into one number.

A single order is a store, a customer, and a drive back toward the store. Predictable.

A batch is a store and several customers, and the mileage depends entirely on how spread out they are. Two batches at the same pay can differ by twenty miles, which at the second-half 2026 rate is $15.20 of vehicle cost you cannot see on the offer.

A return trip is a leg back to the store with an undelivered order or a customer return. Business driving, and exactly the kind of leg a platform route estimate does not contain.

All of it is deductible once you are working. Store to customer, between drops, repositioning while online, and the return legs. The drive from home before you go online is commuting and is not.

2026 is a split-rate year: 72.5 cents January to June, 76 cents July to December, totalled separately.

What counts

Yes:

No:

The commuting rule. · The first and last trip of the day.

Reading an offer

The number to work out is not the offer. It is the offer minus the vehicle cost of the actual route.

A single order: $16 offer, 12-mile round trip. Vehicle cost at 76 cents: $9.12. Left: $6.88 before tax, for perhaps 35 minutes including the store wait.

A three-drop batch: $31 offer, drops spread across 27 miles of driving. Vehicle cost: $20.52. Left: $10.48, for perhaps 70 minutes.

Same platform, same screen, very different offers. Neither is automatically bad. What is bad is not knowing which one you accepted.

This is why the record is worth more than the deduction on a Tuesday. After a month of logging, you can tell from the drop addresses roughly what a batch will cost you before you accept it. What gig pay actually nets. · The four numbers every gig driver should know.

What to record

Date, miles, destination, purpose. Plus total annual miles for the vehicle, which is what the odometer photographs give you.

Two Spark-specific habits:

Log the return legs. An undelivered order that sends you back to the store is real distance and is invisible in any route estimate.

Log the batch shape, not just the total. "3-drop batch, 27 miles" tells you something a year later, and it tells you something next week when a similar offer appears.

What a log has to contain. · Why apps miss trips.

The rest of the deduction

Deductible in addition to the standard mileage rate: business parking and tolls, the business-use share of phone and plan, a mount and charger, and insulated bags or equipment bought for the work.

Parking, tolls and what else you can deduct. · Your phone and plan.

The tax the platform does not withhold

Nothing is withheld from Spark earnings. Net profit carries income tax and self-employment tax at 15.3 percent, which is the part that surprises first-year drivers.

Every recorded mile reduces both. Schedule C for gig drivers. · Quarterly estimated taxes. · A W-2 job and gig driving in the same year.

If you also run other apps

The miles belong to your delivery business, not to a platform. You do not divide them by app and you do not need to.

What is worth doing is recording which platform each trip was for, because that is how you find out which one actually pays where you live, which is a different and more useful question than which one advertises better. Multi-apping. · The end-of-year checklist.

About MileTruth

MileTruth is an iOS app from Baker Ventures LLC that tracks deductible business mileage for gig and delivery drivers and shows true net pay: what is left after mileage, fuel and self-employment tax, not what the platform showed you at acceptance, once you log your online hours. It is built for people driving several platforms in the same shift, and for anyone who needs a mileage log that would hold up if the IRS asked for it. The app is submitted for App Store review and launches automatically on approval.

Everything on this site is free and needs no account: the mileage deduction calculator, the per-platform pay breakdowns, and the answers, each one linked to the IRS publication or platform document it came from. MileTruth publishes the source for every number, including the 2026 split-year standard mileage rate, because a deduction you cannot substantiate is not a deduction.

Questions and answers

Can Walmart Spark drivers deduct mileage?

Yes. Spark drivers are independent contractors, so business miles go on Schedule C. That covers the drive to the store once you are working, the store to each customer, driving between drops on a batch, and repositioning while online.

Does Spark report my mileage?

Any figure the platform provides is its estimate of a route rather than a contemporaneous record of your driving. The IRS asks for a record kept by you at or near the time, so treat a platform figure as a floor to check against, not as the log.

Are return trips deductible?

Driving to return an undelivered order or a customer return, while working, is business driving. Record it, because it is exactly the kind of leg a route estimate does not contain.

How do batched orders change the arithmetic?

A batch with three drops spread across a wide area can carry far more mileage per dollar than a single order at a similar rate. The offer screen does not present that difference clearly, so it has to come from your own record of what similar offers actually cost.

Is the wait time in the store parking area deductible?

Sitting still generates no mileage. The driving to get there and away does, and the wait matters to your hourly rate rather than to your mileage deduction.

What is the mileage rate for 2026?

72.5 cents per mile for January through June and 76 cents for July through December, so business miles must be totalled separately for each half of the year.
